Comeback Ahead
“The Lord is my strength and song…” Exodus 15:2
I am currently reading the Edmund Morris biography of the American inventor and businessman, Thomas Edison, arguably America’s greatest inventor with over 1,000 inventions and patents to his name, including the automatic telegraph, the light bulb, the phonograph, the movie camera, the alkaline storage battery, and the list goes on. In the midst of the Great Depression and shortly before his death in 1931, Mr. Edison gave a valedictory radio address to his fellow citizens from his botanical garden, which included these words, as reported by Edmund Morris:
“My message to you is to be courageous. I have lived a long time. I have seen history repeat itself time and again. I have seen many depressions in business. Always America has come back stronger and more prosperous.”
Encouraging words when we have heard the grimnews of over 100,000 deaths in the United Statesand one in four Americans filing unemployment claims, due to the corona virus. But as Mr. Edison said, America has always had the strength and the resolve to come back as proven so many times in our nation’s history. This positive and heartening attitude can boost our morale as we look forward to the future with the expectation of an even greater and stronger country.
As Moses and the sons and daughters of Israel sang to the Lord after their deliverance from the clutches of the Pharaoh and the Egyptians: “The Lord is my strength and song,” we, too, can sing the same song as a nation.
Prayer: God of strength and compassion, we pray for courage and perseverance as we look forward to an evenbetter future for our country. We ask this in Your name.Amen.
