Let Your Light Shine

Let Your Light Shine

“You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14

My daughter recently sent me a quote from Congressman John Lewis, civil rights leader from Georgia, which included these words: “You are a light. You are the light. Never let anyone—any person or any force---damper, dim, or diminish your light.” Mr. Lewis, son of Alabama sharecroppers and recently diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer, has never given up the fight, whether it was to protest racial injustices that came his way and the way of many others, or his battle against a life-threatening disease.

Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5 to let your light shine before all people. In our current climate, this becomes more important than ever. As Mr. Lewis said—we must never let anything extinguish the light that gives hope to others. When we share optimism about the future we become Christ’s agents of love. And we become that “light on the lampstand” that Jesus talked about, which “gives light to all in the house.”

Prayer: Heavenly Father, as we continue to wonder what the future holds we know how important it is to be a light in the middle of darkness. Inspire us to brighten others’ lives with attitudes of cheerfulness and perseverance. Amen.
