Balancing Needs and Wants with Creation
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,” Genesis 1:1
A picture in the Wall Street Journal recently illustrated the stunning contrast between the panoramas of the Los Angeles area on a normal day before the pandemic hit and after when the area shut down. A blanket of smog covered the area before the stay-at-home orders and relatively clear and clean air surrounded the city after the dramatic reduction of the number of cars on Los Angeles freeways.
I believe part of the silver lining of this crisis will help us to do a better job of figuring out what we need versus what we want in order to help preserve God’s beautiful creation. Global warming, as we know, has been a controversial political topic, but there needn’t be any controversy over what we need to do to help our earth heal: simple steps to concentrate more on what we need and less on what we want. We can begin by examining our personal lives and asking ourselves what can I do without in order to help preserve God’s beautiful creation?
Prayer: Creator God, help us to be good stewards of your creation as we work together to protect the beauty of the land that you have given us. Amen.
